I think I see SATAN in Cooper's eyes! Devil Dog!!!
Or perhaps he's just possessed by the Goa-ould (obscure Stargate reference, sorry). |

Oh Rudy is a handsome boy! I'm sure Cooper is cute too but with those devil eyes I have a hard time looking at him. Anyway, we've got a water lovin' yellow lab so of course I'm partial.

Ooh Dan we posted at the same time. I swear I didn't copy your devil reference. Goa-ould reverence not so obscure. I'm a geek.

Well snap to both of you, because I thought devil-dog as well! You can tell their is an evil plan lurking somewhere in the depths of that brain... Rudy is beautiful though, and looks so happy!

Re: devil-dog. I can never seem to take a flash picture of an animal without getting reflection like that. Anyone know any tricks to avoid it? All my pictures of my kitties look like that.
Rudy was actually a girl. My mom gave her a boy's name for reasons of her own (it was her nickname for her Aunt Ruth). Rudy died last September, but I didn't want to put that downer in the OP. |

The best way to avoid it is to not use flash but that's not always possible of course so the next best thing when using flash is to avoid photographing them while they're looking directly at you. The ideal is roughly 20° from center of their eyes. It's far enough to avoid "devil eye" but not so far to be shooting from the side. If your camera uses red eye reduction it's worth a shot but usually won't work like it does on humans - again, because of the tapetum in the animals' eyes. It's just too reflective. If you use an SLR with an external flash, you can of course bounce the flash off of a low ceiling or use a diffuser. Hope this helps. |

Yea...a red-eye program doesn't usually work on animals. Their eyes aren't red.
I have trouble with taking pics of my granddaughter with a flash. She almost always gets red-eye and her hair is SO red that the red-eye feature wants to also darken in her hair. It's very tricky and I have lost several great pictures because of this problem. |

I know there are some programs that allow you to draw a region of interest around the eye and only take out the red there. iPhoto for the Mac is one.

Of course Photoshop has an excellent red eye tool but it's certainly spendy. Photoshop Elements does a somewhat mediocre job of red eye correction (although the newer versions are getting better and better) and most users wind up manually correcting. Nevertheless, manual correction is certainly the best method regardless since it gives you the greates control. Whatever program you use, Google how to use the red-eye removal tool and you should get lots of helpful hints. The easiest way I've found to do it is to use the color replacement tool. I've done this with CS2, Elements, and PSP. |

Attached is a pic of our cat Mickey. That cute cat under my name also has devilcat moments. Or perhaps he's just hosting a goa'uld (Solaria, that's for you!).
Dan p.s. gotta love those random redeye moments! |
