Cheers...

So I should give it a chance and drink more beer - since my mother's got osteoporosis

I believe the real main factor in preventing osteoporosis is simply continual mild exercise daily of the legs and arms, and a calcium pill daily will help also, but the exercise is pretty essential.

Might I elaborate? exercise is essential to preventing osteoporosis. Also, supplements are great, but getting calcium through natural food sources is best.

Many thanks, will definitely keep in mind from now on. My remarks about calcium tablets is because many don't get enough in natural diets, or have malabsorption problems and so on.

So advice is to encourage people to carry weights while walking long distances, or jogging?

I take a calcium chew rather than a tablet. It's like having a tootsie roll. I personally don't believe that tablets get absorbed real well. That's why I also take gummy vitamins for my vitamin C and multi-vitamin.

Weight-bearing exercise would be any activity where you are bearing your weight. Just walking (even without weights) is better for your bones than swimming. Not that swimming isn't great exercise - it is, but you are buoyant in the water, not bearing your weight. This is why astronauts lose bone mass in space even when they exercise daily.

Reminds me of "Sleeper", when Woody Allen woke up to a world in which it had been discovered that smoking and other bad things were good for your health.
