Default WTF? In the 21st Century?

Irish blasphemy law goes into effect today.

But there isn't much new on it since May. Google.

WHAT "defences"? The whole reason blasphemy laws are so pernicious is that believers, who need not offer any proof of harm or any rational basis for claiming offense, can set the offense bar so low that even an ant can't pass under it. Thus, "I'm exhausted and would like to skip church and sleep in this Sunday" can be deemed just as "grossly insulting" and "outrageous" as "Christians should be imprisoned and tortured until they deconvert."

yea, Blair Scott and D.J. Grothe were posting about this a few weeks ago. It seems a few steps back, did they not learn their lesson from the scandals of the orphanages and laundries ran by the catholic charities? had to apologize for that, *I see a vision many years down the road where they have to apologize for this stupid shit too!!

*yes, I have ESPN

I'm beginning to think that there is a reason for all those Irish jokes.

There are folk resisting this terrible law http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010...law?CMP=AFCYAH

Does this mean that when in Ireland I have to keep my mouth shut about how much I hate spaghetti and meat balls? It will be entertaining to see how people break this law in ridiculous ways just to test it's legality.

I would swear I remember seeing a poll showing that a majority of the Irish population believe in fairies, so it really isn't that surprising that they would pass a law against criticism of organized superstition.

Eek. Best not lose the temper.

And best stay in the closet about your disbelief, since any expression of such could cause an offensive "outrage".

I don't think Ireland will be high on my vacation list. What a bunch of papist idiots.

I haven't really read up on this, just saw it mentioned by P.Z. Myers. Do you think it's really papists behind this? I sort of thought it might be fear of muslim violence.

You would.

Nah, it's the Church. It still has a grip on Ireland, though its grip is much diminished since the paedophile priests scandal.

Talking Dragged backwards I see....

I'm not Irish but it looks pretty stupid to me. I'm descended from drunken Englishmen and drunken Scotsmen (and women).

My darling daughter, who is an agnostic, used to say "GODDAMNIT!!! OH, uh, I mean gosh darn it!". ROFL!!!

I think I raised her right....Unitarian Universalist secular humanist here.
