Is anyone else here a stargazer? I work nights, so on my nights off, I stay up, and if weather permits, stargaze.

I will try to be a good guide, but if anyone else wants to chime in, you can guide too.

Right now the Andromeda Galaxy is high in the sky, and Orion rises before the sun.

I make my own constelations. I don't see any reason I should have to stick in the same imaginary box as some Greeks or Romans. I used to have a star chart and all, but it's a lot more interesting when you get to use your imagination and find your own patterns in the sky. Try it some time. See what you come up with. Without the constelations set in stone you can find new things in the sky every night depending on your mood.

You could also to try to dig up what constellations that people elsewhere in the world have designated. I've thought of doing so myself.

I've thought of inventing my own constellations also; isn't pareidolia fun?

In any case, it's interesting that the southernmost "official" constellations include some techno-geeky items like an octant, a telescope, a microscope, and a clock. Not surprisingly, those ones were named in the 18th cy.

I know that the Seven Sisters is Subaru in Japan, but I have no idea what "Subaru" means in Japan. I think it's just a name. Knowing other interpretations would make for an interesting hobby.

I also like looking for images in the clouds and on toasted bread or grilled tortillas, and not just for selling them on ebay as religious paraphernalia.

Bookmarked. Thanks!

Wikipedia to the rescue!

Quote:
The company is named after the star cluster Pleiades, which in Greek mythology is known as the Seven Sisters, and in Japanese mythology the name is "Subaru", which roughly translated into English means, "to govern", "unite," or "gather together". The company logo is influenced by the star cluster. The large star in the logo represents Fuji Heavy Industries, and the five smaller stars represent the current five companies that are united under the FHI group.

Last night was supposedly a good night to watch the Orionids, however, as is quite often the case in my part of the world, it was quite overcast last night. Probably is again tonight, too.
