Default Saddam to hang

Afraid I don't have a link as I saw it on AOL news, but Saddam Hussain has been found guilty of mass murder and sentenced to hang.

I don't really have any feelings about this either way. It was predictable right from the start. I don't agree with the death penalty but there was never any chance that there would be another penalty imposed.

I just woke up and haven't seen the news, yet. I wonder how this will play out in Iraq?

Hanging is not a pretty death, unless they get it right and snap his neck. Even then, hanging bothers me.

That's what happens when the USA puts you in power and makes you their tool. As soon as you cross us, you're doomed. Stupid foreign policy of ours.

Hanging was used here for decades - they generally do get it right these days. But I don't want to see anyone executed, on general principle.

I think the right thing would have been to store him away safely somewhere and try him later, in an Iraq not under USA occupation. It is now extremely easy to paint the whole trial as a kangaroo court doing the bidding of the neocons/Americans/you name it. This is a way to make him a hero of many Iraqis, even if other Iraqis no doubt hate him with a passion.

And even then, it is just that the executioner and the witnesses can easier convince themselves that the guy died immediately, instead of just being rendered unable to do anything - including breathe or signal extreme discomfort - for the remaining minute/half-minute or so of his life. Spine damage hurts like hell, but as he loses control of his body from the neck down, he cannot shriek. It's cruel and yet usual punishment all right.

All forms of capital punishment bother me, or at least so I think most of the time. OTOH, once again I have to draw the parallel with Ceausescu of Romania. I was pretty happy when he was executed, even though it wasn't based on due process - the "prosecutors" simply cursed him face-to-face for an hour or so, then took him and his wife out and shot them. So, after all, there are cases when I make an exception. Maybe some Iraqis are justified feeling the same, in which case, who are we to pretend knowing better?

There's understanding, and there's lack of a desire for understanding. They feel almost the same.

Put a monoxide exhaust in his cell when he goes to sleep. He won't ever wake up. If I were ever to approve of any method of execution, it would be monoxide poisoning. No pain, no fear, no mess to clean up, and hardly any preparation.

I don't have any sympathy for Saddam, but I guess Cheney and Bush and most of that clan deserve a similar fate. Its not consistent to condemn a person for genocide of 150 something people and not the one who killed 3000 of his own men and 130000+ people in a foreign land.

When your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

I keep seeing on the internets the picture of Rumsfeld?Cheney? shaking hands with Saddam. Wasn't that photo taken after the massacre Saddam was sentenced for now?

Right. It was Rumsfeld. The Dujail massacre took place 8 July 1982. The photo was taken 20 December 1983.
