But in US politics, how does one predict which candidate is the least likely to win? Is any aspect of modern US politics that predictable when choices so often seem to defy logic? Not only can a muscle-bound, intellectually-challenged Austrian end up in charge of a state, an ignorant, deluded, near-illiterate moron can end up in the White House and control of world's largest nuclear arsenal and military machine. Surely a system that can produce those results is inherently unpredictable - not to mention the world's worst advert for democracy. Even political systems as flawed as that of the former Soviet Union consistently produced better leaders.

You can't. All you can do is try. I voted for Nixon in the Republican Primary because I was sure that after losing the Presidential once (against JFK) and the Governorship of California once (against Brown, Jr.) he couldn't win.

I'm voting in the Democratic Primary this time. It's too close between the candidates, and I want to nominate one who can win. We need to get the Repugs out so bad that it doesn't really matter who the Dem candidate is. I'll vote for Caligula's horse if that's the Dem candidate.

This thread is about Romney's speech about religion, but I'm much more scared by Huckabee's speech about changing the Constitution to match the Biblical ideals.

Big business are the ones who have the greatest influence in teh aprties and the electoral colleges. If Huckabee looks like a nut he'll be out. Thing is Romney is already hand in glove with big business, including the lds, which if it was a private company would be in the top fifty biggest companies in the world.

The thing to watch for is out of left field smear campaigns, they will show who business is supporting.

This scares the crap out of me. I can see us becoming a theocracy and it freaks me out.

By the way, did anyone hear the story about how Romney put his dog in a crate on top of his station wagon and drove across country while the poor dog was terrified and pooped and peed all over itself. According to what I heard, Romney just hosed him off at a gas station and kept going. This was several years ago.

Sorry to drift a bit off topic there...

Seems the story is true. What a bastard.

And then there's the story about him using very bad language against a parking attendant at Utah Olympics.

Gracious and empathic this guy is not.

Someone should stick him in a crate with Bill Frist and toss it off a bridge.
