Going to the dentist is like being in war
|

I've promised myself to keep my blog going with as much as possible actual daily entries. I'm very bad at this, so please pardon me, but I shall try my hardest.
Anyway:
Going to the dentist is much like going to war .....
as I said to my dentist a short while back. Going to a dentist is exactly like war, in that it is long periods of boredom and waiting, only relieved by interruptions of short periods of absolute terror.
My dentist laughed (yes, this line I invented myself; I did not

Oil tankers go sailing

It's really been bad how I've neglected my blog owing to other duties, illness etc., but let's get it moving again, and that under sail.
An item of news I found that was of interest to myself and a small sign of hope for the future is that after many test voyages, tweaking and so on, the Beluga SkySails will be undertaking its first actual commercial voyage, this November sailing out of Bremen (a northern German port),

I make a bad pic

A bit like announcing the Pope is a Catholic, but I've made a bad pic this time, but my excuse is that it was bloody hard to get any pic at all. The pic you see at left is a cut-out from that photo; you can see the whole photo here, somewhat downsized.
It's of one of the shrews that live in my garden; they're extremely hard to photograph, being only out in the evening, and this was the only photo out of many where I photograp

This is the first blog entry of mine for a new blog category I made for myself (you too can create new categories for your own blog), and the category is named "Green Techno"; I'm going to use this for posting interesting and informative stuff on new technology for individuals, or new ways to use pre-existing technology, for self-sufficiency and renewable energy. Bad times will be creeping up on us over the next years and decades, and I want all HH members to have as much information as possibl

De-Hitler-ising a flame tree

I have a flame tree, an Illawarra Flame tree (Brachychiton acerifolius, also called a Kurrajong, not to be confused with the African Flame Tree or several other trees also called flame trees). When I brought it back from Australia, IIRC 4 years ago, it wasn't even six inches high; now it is taller than me. You can see an adult photo of a Brachychiton acerifolius at

I actually make a good photo

I actually made a good photo, by pure accident. Normally I do fiddle around with settings, and I do try at least to photo not too badly, but usually it's just barely competent, so it's big news when I actually make a good photo. Anyway, it was a photo of my new lingonberries, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, also called cowberries, partridgeberries, mountain cranberries or foxberries (and Pralina Beeren in German). They wer

Life imitates art (or imitates old jokes)

Back in the Breshnev years, in the late 1970's to early 1980's, there was a joke going around inside the USSR that went like this:
Breshnev and his wife attend a conference in West Germany. When the conference is finished, they take the train back to the USSR.
The train choofs and choofs and choofs along. Breshnev's wife gets bored, and asks her husband, "Leonid, dahlink, which country are we in now?"
Breshnev opens the train-carriage window, sticks his arm out the window, brings it b

Nature is just so Freudian
|

Nature is just so Freudian sometimes, isn't it? The lefthand pic is a photo I made of a burgeoning blossom of a Flanders poppy, a.k.a. a corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Nature of course did flowers as a sexual overture to bees and other insects, the vegetable equivalent of really coming out of the closet, I suppose, but if you look at some of the forms that Nature does with flowers, you just have to wonder just how fa
