s'funny, I only heard about this through the backlash, but like the guys at Penny Arcade, I *do* believe there is such a thing as bad publicity.
Not that I was ever going to buy one anyway.

I've been avoiding Sony since the rootkit fiasco. Which is to say, I've never been able to afford their hardware anyway, but now I'm not buying it with a virtual glare at them.
I can't understand what the plan was for this. The website is completely insipid - just one of millions of teeny blogs blathering about their interests which no-one but their bestest friends reads. If I'm a 17yo wigga with rich parents, I can't think of any reason why I'd be wasting my time on my compadres' witterings. The only way this would have reached any fraction of Sony's target audience is the way it has - relying on the internet's ghoulishness to attract its denizens to festering carcasses. Positive memes don't spread around the web, unless they end with a moral about Jesus.

Yeesh. Sony have now admitted (http://www.alliwantforxmasisapsp.com/blog/) (same as 1st link) that the whole thing was a fraud, switched to lower-middle-class hipsterisms, and blamed the debacle on their being 'just a little too clever'.
Good thing they've learned all the right lessons from this.

The rootkit thing was the breaking point for me too.

Meh - I thought this was going to be a link to the Maddox article (http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=sony_bullshit), which would have surprised me as IIRC, Jinx doesn't like his stuff. Vaguely interesting, nonetheless: I've never reallly been a console person, but enjoyed what I've played on the PS and PS2.
