View Full Version : About My (and Your) Screen Name
HawkerHurricane
24-Oct-2007, 04:38 AM (04:38)
Since someone asked, I decided to tell.
It's a long story. I'm a big history buff, and have been since the 1960's, when after Sunday Football the local station would play the old NBC "Victory at Sea" and the BBC's "World at War".
I first used the name during the early 1980's, when I started playing role-playing games, including one now gone called "Space Opera" (the subject matter should be obvious). We all set up characters named after WW2 equipment, and I ended up with "Hyperdrive Technician Johnathan Hawker 'Hurricane'".
In the late 1990's, I discovered the internet, and during the 2000 election campaign I made my position known (anti-Bush) while also letting slip my place of work (Naval Hospital San Diego) and using a screen name consisting of my rank and initial (SM1K). Some arsehole objected to my position (what career military man could be anti-Bush?), and figured out my real name and position at the hospital, and emailed my Commanding Officer about my "Objectionable Politics". My CO didn't care about my politics, but asked that I be more careful. I came up with the old "Hawker Hurricane" name for a nom-de-net for any place I might talk politics. So I've been using this name since October 2000 for pretty much everything.
"Now you know!"

'Megan' seems so feeble after that.
I want a name with a story attached!
I need to be a bit more incentive next time.
Quath
24-Oct-2007, 04:00 PM (16:00)
Heh, Quath also comes from a roleplaying game. It use to be a semi decent way to hide my identity. I had a slight worry that people at my work would use my atheistic stance against me.
But I found out that most people here are atheists or agnostics or only lightly religious. But Quath is still a rare enough name that I can use it to log onto websites without using some odd combination of my real name and some numbers.

24-Oct-2007, 10:48 PM (22:48)
Don Alhambra is the Grand Inquisitor of Spain in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Gondoliers. I played the part in a production in 2004, and used it when I joined my first internet forum... IIDB, of course.

24-Oct-2007, 11:00 PM (23:00)
I went searching through Greek mythology for my name. Thalia was the name of the muse of comedy and a Grace of good cheer. Those are both qualities that could describe me so I chose that name.

25-Oct-2007, 02:00 AM (02:00)
Marc Detrs is the name of the protagonist from one of my favorite pulp sci-fi novels. I used another name for a long time, but ended up with an internet stalker, so a name change was in order.
I like the look and sound of this.

My username comes from a very-little-known trilogy of books by Terry Pratchett. The trilogy is called The Bromeliad, and it comprises Truckers, Diggers and Wings. Since the trilogy is not part of the DiscWorld novels, most Pterry fans (Pterry = Terry Pratchett, insider joke) don't actually know it well, since they all tend to stick to the DiscWorld novels.
One character, my favourite, is Masklin; but his name sounds too much like "mask"; another character I can identify with has a really ugly-looking name; and another is "Gurdur". Yet all three do reflect parts of my personality, so I find it OK to use "Gurdur"; it's the most euphonious name of them.

That I am a Bright is more significant, I think, than that I'm grumpy, thus the capitalization.

27-Oct-2007, 04:25 AM (04:25)
My name (and avatar) came from a short-lived web design company I had a few years ago. I decided on the name mostly because it was available as a domain name and it sounded kind of techie with the word silicon in it. The screen name has outlived the company by several years now. It doesn't mean that much to me any more, but I'm too boring to think up a new one.

What most people said when asked, "What they thought about my new pair of glasses?" Over half said, "It looked very, ummmm, retro". I don't have a good explanation as to why I chose to add a 'w' at the end. It seemed like a cool thing to do at one time but in retro(w)spect seems rather lame.

I'm not too creative so was sitting in front of the computer struggling to think of a name to sign up with on an atheist website. It occured to me that I was signing up there because I'd NEVER beleived in God (and never believed in or done a lot of other things for that matter), so there it was. Seemed lame at the time, but I'm keeping it because I hate change. :smt015

I used to be a Christian. After de-converting I realized I had spent most of my life blindly following a doctrine I had never questioned. Since I was also a huge Rob Zombie fan when I was younger the two things came together for my user name.
Hedwig
29-Oct-2007, 08:40 PM (20:40)
Mine is a reference to Hedwig from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I'm not a transsexual from east Berlin, but I just really loved that character and the play/movie in general. I changed my name to Hedwig over at IIDB not long after I began posting there and it just kind of stuck.
Elsewhere I'm also known as Susan Sto-Helit, a character from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels that Gurdur referred to.

I always liked Susan's boyfriend, Lobsang Ludd. Must be a interesting relationship...
(Susan Sto-Helit is the adopted daughter of DEATH, and works as a elementary school teacher; Lobsang is the natural born son of Time and has worked as a clockmaker, thief, and Monk of History)

Me too. Lobsang (both of him ;)) is a very interesting character. There have been no new Susan/Death books since Thief of Time, IIRC. I'm really curious to see how her relationship with Lobsang is working out. Especially with him taking over his mother's job and all.

Some years back I was trying to register for a board (stardock maybe?) and my usual mortonr (Morton, Rob) which been my most common work id on various platforms and 2 employers, was taken. As were any variants I could live with. Casting around my bookshelves I happened to spot "Wutan tai chi chuan" by Cheng Tin Hung and Dan Docherty and decided I preferred the better known spelling. It refers to some mountain peaks in China (see Crouching Tiger etc).

29-Oct-2007, 10:16 PM (22:16)
My name is Mason in real life.
...
That's why it's my name here. A bonus is that if I ever met anyone off the net they'd have no trouble going from calling me my screen name to my real name.
I'm otherwise known as Mace, because a lot of people in real life call me Mace out of habit and some sort of nickname. So if I was called Mace in real life by anyone, I'd think nothing of it.

Goldie...
I was LilCarolyn on other sites.
I chose Goldie, to be rid of my real name, simply because I LOVE yellow gold jewelry, I like wearing fashions with gold threads (tastefully) fashioned throughout and I have gold/blonde streaks in my naturally dark hair.
If going out on the town, I might dust myself with the finest gold glitter.
It looks good with my skin color. What can I say?
The Avatar is me... wearing gold... necklace... and brown and gold blouse. The picture was taken by my 5 yr old granddaughter Theresa (AKA Bumpy -The Bump or The Bumpster) hence, the big smile is for her!:-D
perfessor
30-Oct-2007, 02:10 AM (02:10)
When I was in grade school, "The Absent-Minded Professor" was in theaters - the Fred MacMurray version, not Robin Williams. Kids started calling me that, and it never seemed to go away. Many years later, someone at the Go club started calling me 'perfessor', evidently because I talked a better game than I played.
I like that it's misspelled, since I'm not a pro - I'm strictly amateur.

Cheese is a nickname I was given many years ago. I think it came from helping young people learn the Engineering trade...hence the Big Cheese...the way they were smurking made me think it might be because of the smell of my socks!
My sports hero growing up was Gerry Cheevers of the Boston Bruins....many years later I found out he was referred to as...Cheese.
My wife calls me Cheese...friends call me the same...and I love all forms of Cheese with a nice glass of red wine!
I think my real name is Dayel...(pronounced Dale)

Back in the last days of the 20th century, I signed up on the now defunct USA Today message boards on a whim and had to come up with something quickly. Therefore used the nickname of the company I worked for at the time (IBM). The name "BigBlue" was taken, so I tacked the "2" on at the end. Lugubert
31-Oct-2007, 01:27 PM (13:27)
This name has roots from years before the Internet. When driving from Sweden through Germany, a convenient hotel was owed by the brothers having the given names Herbert and Norbert. At one point in life, I investigated the possibilites of getting an alternative identity, mostly for fun.
Everywhere, Swedish companies and shops choose names in English. I wanted something punning and more German. Somehow, Lugubert Jederman emerged. Lugubert is in Swedish the adjective 'lugubrious', and the last name is inspired by the play Jedermann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedermann) but in a more modern mainstream German spelling. So, after using my real given name on the first few fora I discovered in March 2004, I realized that I should use a less transparent name to hide behind when posting very personal opinions. So, I am Lugubert it is from mid 2005.

One of my favourite bands is the Velvet Underground. I was playing around with the name, just sort of rolling it around in my head, and came up with an alternative in the Velvet Fingers. I used it as my yahoo email address (to my friends' amusement), and then as a username.
Storm_Raven
31-Oct-2007, 04:17 PM (16:17)
I'll start with Raven, friends used to comment/complain that I always dressed all in black like a raven, raven is also associated with two of the deities I work with The Morrigan and Odin.
Storm partly comes from the colour of my eyes, they remind people of the see on a stormy day and according to every woman I know who has looked into them they are rather unusual, the other part is that whenever I am either angry or very happy friends say that they can feel coming like and approaching storm.

Sarpedon
31-Oct-2007, 10:30 PM (22:30)
When I was in high school, my best friend got in a big fight with another mutual friend. Now, because he was a big geek, he started thinking about this in allegorical terms, and assigned everyone involved a role from the Iliad, with himself as Achilles, and the other guy as Hector.
I was assigned the role of Priam. I was not happy. I chose Sarpedon instead.
My avatar is from a greek vase showing the dead and naked Sarpedon being carried away by sleep and death with Father Zeus looking on.

31-Oct-2007, 10:35 PM (22:35)
For a while I used the nick SinisterDexter.
Liked the way it played on the Left/Right origin and contained the word Sinister. I used it up until I wanted to set up a blog/website of my own and found that the name was already in use for a clothing line, a musical group, and a few other things.
So, I got creative and combined syllables from my first and last name.
I know you're all going to be impressed by my incredible creativity; hope you're sitting down.

I was raised Roman Catholic and we had to pick a saint's name as a confirmation name when I was in the third grade. I read through this long book of saints looking for a name I liked, and I came across St. Christina the Astonishing (http://www.cynthialarge.com/christina/christinaessay2.html), who was totally wild. The church couldn't decide if she was crazy or holy so they split the difference and made her the patron saint of insane people and mental health workers. The nuns REALLY disapproved of my choice but had no good reason to say no, so Christina it was. When I came across IIDB as I was googling for something else I wanted to post in a mental health topic that I saw, and that name seemed as good as any to register with. I changed it to her latin name, Christina Mirabilis, because 'the astonishing' was going to be a bit hard to live up to as a newbie. No one ever knew what it meant and figured it was my real name, but since everyone there knows me as Christina I might as well keep that part. She and I have a lot in common anyway : )

Yes, my nickname is derived from the Microsoft Corporation. To explain why, I have to start with the CD "Truhla Járy Cimrmana" (Jára Cimrman's chest) which came out in the Czech Republic several years ago. You can find more about this fictional Czech genius in his Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A1ra_Cimrman).
The disk was mentioned in an article in Lidové noviny (a Czech newspaper) which recounted the CD's claims: Cimrman is also credited with invention of the CD (and that the abbreviation actually means "Cimrman's disk"). Unfortunately, he manufactured them using wood and wax, which made them not very durable. "Later, Mic Rosoft took hold of this invention ..." (Microsoft was a producer of this CD.)
And this is where my nickname came into existence.

I never could settle on a name that meant something or came from some source. Every time I've ever thought, "Yeah, that's the name for me," I've changed my mind shortly thereafter. So I just decided to make up something that rhymed, because rhyming is nice. Somewhere in the back of my head the lyrics to a Springsteen song were floating around: "We'll pick up Hazy Davy and Killer Joe," and I latched onto it for no particular reason, changing the Davy to Daisy because, well, I'm a she, not a he. Plus, it rhymes better. And no, Daisy is not my real name. I like daisies, though. And I can be pretty hazy.
brianp
03-Nov-2007, 12:32 PM (12:32)
brianp - I've no imagination either, it's my forename and the first letter of my surname. Well actually I've always believed in complete, even compulsory, openness on the Internet on the basis that everybody should stand full square behind every word they write and not be allowed to lie about their age, hide behind pseudonyms etc. I believed, still believe, that if everyone did this, there would be less opportunity for abuse of and on the Internet. To that end I use my full name on several newsgroups and mailing lists (nothing exciting, mostly family-history). I did the same when I joined the JREF Forum - though I'm a very infrequent poster there, you will find a few posts from Brian Pears - but I soon realized that I was virtually the only person who did so. Consequently I've partly sold out anonymity and used either brianp or brian_1945 (my year of birth) on forums I've joined since then. When I contemplated joining Heathen Hangout I was going to go all the way and use gatesheadgrump, but while lurking I noticed that you already had a 'grumpy' and so, not wanting to be accused of plagiarism, I fell back on boring old brianp.

I love this. Way to put the nuns in a bind.

Thanks. It's a pencil sketch of my great-grandfather, Joseph Walker (1857-1940), who I'm told looked very like me. It was drawn by one of his friends shortly before his retirement in 1930 and was entitled "The Old Coke Burner" - Joe was Master Coke Burner at Chopwell Colliery, Co Durham for 31 years and had been involved in coke burning all his working life.
Chopwell where he lived and worked was infamous as it was there that the General Strike of 1926 began (in 1925). It was a left-wing place, to put it mildly. They had communist sunday-schools competing with those of the Methodists and Anglicans and the villagers received food parcels and financial assistance from the Russians - earning the village the well-deserved name of "Little Moscow". Joe's son, my grandfather, who was also called Joe, was one of a dozen or so men in the village jailed under the emergency regulations during the strike for union activity.
But I digress.

In case you don't have seen the TV series, He is a product of fantasy obviously. But the name is an old known historic person.

After I had lurked at RnR for a few hours, I posted a hello and said I would lurk some more and feel my way around. An asshat named GunnerJ told me to just feel my way out of there.
Then I ran in to a post by someone calling herself the Lying Cunt. She was complaining about her treatment at IIDB, and I thought, justifiably so. I posted what I thought was a kind word and she shit down my neck. Was that you?

07-Nov-2007, 08:22 PM (20:22)
I've probably said this somewhere else on here, but: I used to call this strange dance I ended up doing the first time I ever got drunk (I was a late starter at around 17, I think. More than made up for that during my undergrad years...) the 'Slidey Foot' dance, which carried on into uni. Basically involved me jumping around enthusiastically swishing my legs across the floor. Hence using slideyfoot as my nickname all over the internet: there is a Facebook vid of me looking silly on the dancefloor, but that involves more of a wiggly hip than a slidey foot. :wink2:
My username comes from a very-little-known trilogy of books by Terry Pratchett. The trilogy is called The Bromeliad, and it comprises Truckers, Diggers and Wings.
I always assumed that was him writing for kids: at least thats when I read them. Although its clearly been way too long since I last picked up the books, as I can't remember anything about them except the covers. :-D
Still have the hardback of Truckers lying around somewhere, I think.
Get in touch with Benkyo, slideyfoot, Pyrogenesis and maybe Jinx here. Or start a thread sometime? I'm dreadfully absent-minded, and I can never quite remember who plays Go and who of those doesn't.

I nearly always have to repeat and clarify the pronunciation of my name during introductions to Japanese people, and the fastest and most concise way of doing it has proven to be by saying 'benkyo no Ben', or in other words, 'ben as in benkyo (study)'

__________
I guess I've delayed this long enough.
A few years ago, there was a radio personality, who was always a little off the wall, and supposedly a Satan worshiper, to top it all off. He was telling a story about how he told the phone company, his name was "(first name) Relative (last name)A Dead." Therefore, when the phone rang, it came up, "A Dead, Relative."
Think about it.
Wife: Honey?! Who's on the phone?
Husband: A...Dead...Relative
Anyway, to make a long story short, I liked the idea, and made it an email address, just to have a little fun. The name stuck, and I started using it as a screen name, in place of my other, which I still use, when I want to be a tad bit more sophisticated. "theco2" or "The CO2" is my other screen name, which comes from my first and middle names (Calvin Oscar), and I'm the 2nd. I wanted to use "CO2," as it's been a nickname of mine, for a long time, but it's almost always taken, so I gave up on that one.
I also use to have fun with my screen names, and make up some others. I was also known as "Devils Advocate," "Not My God," (a song title) and "Ten Minute God" (also a song title) in chat, so from that and "A Dead Relative," came other derivatives, such as "A Dead God," "Devil's Relative," etc. Not long after I started using "Ten Minute God," I decided to change it, because everyone was taking it as a sexual connotation, of which it wasn't intended, saying, "That's All?" I changed it to "Five Hour God." You should have seen the comments, then. I'll leave that to your imagination. ;-)
All in all, I like using "A Dead Relative," because it's started a lot of good conversations, and gets a lot of laughs.
Believe it or not, people have taken offense to my screen name. Saying stuff like "My mom just died, I find that disrespectful." :smt104 I just laugh at them, because it's not like I point at their loss. Some people are offended by anything, I guess.

Interesting thread. Usually I use my first name but when that's taken I sometimes use Solaria. Sort of a dual meaning in my name. Solaria - Planet in Asimov Robot novels (can't remember which - "I Robot" I think). Plus it sort of relates to my first name of Dawn and my Gmother's name of Aurora.
I first used it as a name when I placed an online personal ad about 7 years ago. I met my hubby through that ad so it has special meaning for me. He is also responsible for my alter ego Nocturnia which he still uses on the rare occasion that "solaria" is naughty.

The planet Solaria first shows up in "The Caves of Steel", the first of the Lije Bailey/R. Daneel Ovilar novels. The planet Aurora shows up in "The Robots of Dawn", the last of those novels.

I chose #13 because of all the triskaidekaphobia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triskaidekaphobia) out there. It became my favorite number as I noticed the magnitude of this irrational fear, from buildings "not having" a 13th story or apartment to people not getting married on the 13th of any month. The fact that the letter M is the thirtheenth of the Roman alphabet is gravy --> My name is Medelin, hence the importance on the letter M.
I've used Lucky13 before, but when it was time to create a username here I put some thought into it and since I don't believe in luck... #13 it is.
I also like the number 666 but... that's a whole other can of worms .

I have been a consummate vagabond panhandler for about ten years now, and about a year and half ago I recognized that I am an unabashed Cynic.
And, presidential candidate Obama doesn't know what a Cynic believes (http://usliberals.about.com/od/extraordinaryspeech2/a/ObamaIowaSpch.htm).
But on this January night, at this defining moment in history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn't do.Cynic's do not claim that he cannot win elections, we merely claim that all politicians campaign for their own self-interests and not the greater public good.

'All' is a rather sweeping statement. I'm sure that some politicians do exactly this. But all of them? Including the ones who are so unpopular they never get elected because they actually stick to their principles? Or the ones who lie to get elected and then try to pass legislation that they think is right?
Politics, by its very nature, is very much not-simple.
