I have been listening to a song by Tom Lehrer and in one of his songs he has a line that goes -
'Go directly, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars'.
I tried searching for the meaning of this phrase, but everywhere I look I see it being used, but no explanation on what it really means. Has anyone here heard of or used this phrase and know what it means?

I used to love the game Monopoly, and I remember as a kid trying to adapt the most cruel and violent business tactics as possible. I'd make deals and then betray the people being loyal to me, putting them out of the game. Soon enough, though, everyone knew not to trust me so I had to adapt a more durable set of tactics.
I loved that game, and won a good deal of the games I played. Ah...

Good old Monopoly. I used to challenge my father to gladiator Monopoly games. He was a mean old monster. He also hated to lose, especially to a female. There would be a grim silence at the Monopoly board. I'd load up a property block with hotels and when he'd land on it, the veins on his head would stand out and pulse like a weightlifter. When he'd finally pick up the board and throw it, I knew I'd won. Yeeeaaah, baby.:-D
Ah, childhood. ;-)

In Monopoly you collect $200 every time you progress pass the intitial starting point called "Go". Depending upon a space you land on you may have to pick a card which occasionally tells you to advance a number of spaces or retreat some. It is sometimes in the cards that you should "go directly to jail. Do not pass Go" on the way and "do not collect $200" for doing so. That's to emphasize to greedy people that because "jail" is a space that you may have to pass Go for to get to, the normal rule of getting a $200 boost of play money does not apply. I haven't played Monopoly in 45 years but it's burned into my noggin.

In my first marriage, I brought on our first fight by playing a Monopoly game against my new bride, and playing it to win. Okay, I persuaded her to sell me some property for much less than it was worth, but I didn't break the rules!

Hope you learned your lesson. Ya gotta lose to win.

The last time I checked (it's been a few years), my Monopoly game was worth $130 on ebay. The advantages (you have to find them where you can) of being old.

Uh huh. On ebay that would be known as "vintage".

As long as you are not in the 100+ catagory...which makes you an heirloom!
Personally, I won't be considered an antique for several years yet, but you would definitely call me retro!!! lol

I played it with my sisters when we were little. We played nice. We would let one another collects sets so that we could build houses and hotels.
Then, I played it again when I got to college. It was a piranha-like feeding frenzy. Greed. Duplicity. Double crossing. Back stabbing. What a rude awakening that was. Welcome to the real world.
